P. 354, re: area around Three Lakes: "Though a summer pleasure land for vacationists, this is a grudging land for farmers who must toil long months with double-bitted ax, grub hoe, and dynamite to win a few submarginal acres. Often the only evidence of such labor is an abandoned shack with sashless windows gaping at the young trees creeping back to reclaim the clearings." P. 377 (south of Mercer): "The Northern Lakes Region, ... in ratio of water to land surface is paralleled only by two other places: one includes part of Minnesota and the Province of Ontario, northwest of Lake Superior; the other includes part of southern Finland, east of the Gulf of Bothnia. In Iron, Vilas, and Oneida Counties along, lakes comprise 15 per cent of the total area, swamps an additional 21 per cent."
